Music and dancing are very popular activities in Ireland, and they have been for hundreds of years. Irish music uses instruments like harps, flutes and uilleann pipes, which are like Ireland's version of bagpipes. In bars around Ireland one person will play their instrument and often people will join them until a large group of people are playing the same song on their instruments.

Irish dancing is quite
difficult. The dancer’s feet are moving quite fast while the arms are still and
against their sides. Many years ago, dancing was a way for people in Ireland to
meet other people, and this would be a happy way to end a long week. Now Irish
dancing has become very popular across the world, and many people enjoy going
to see performances of Irish dancers.
In a lot of Irish schools,
children are shown an easy version of the dance and some children take part in
competitions all over Ireland. They are also shown how to play an instrument
called the tin whistle that is used in many Irish songs.
